The Serah Project

Hope for the Forgotten – Breaking cycles of despair through love, faith, and care for children of prisoners in Uganda.

About Us

We are the Serah Project — a faith-driven Christian ministry in Uganda that exists to break the cycle of despair for children whose parents are in prison.

Rooted in the biblical command to care for “the least of these,” we combine prison ministry with holistic, long-term care for the children left behind. Through prayer, practical support, education, and unconditional love, we help these children discover their true identity, worth, and God-given potential.

Our Founder: Esther Nakyagulanyi Kiweewa

Esther is a wife, mother of two, and the heart behind the Serah Project. With a Degree in Business Management (specializing in Banking and Finance) and a Diploma in SAP Accounting, she was headed for a stable finance career — until God called her to something greater.

One prison visit changed everything. Seeing children suffering in heartbreaking conditions planted a seed of compassion that would not be ignored.

Her husband’s own childhood — finding refuge and hope in a children’s home — deepened her resolve. She left banking to serve full-time, turning personal hardship into a ministry of redemption.

How the Serah Project Began

Around 2017, Esther began visiting prisons across Uganda (with full government permission). She prayed with inmates, shared Scripture, and provided essentials like sanitary towels, sugar, and soap. Most importantly, she asked parents:

“When your time with your child in prison ends (by law, children may only stay until 18 months), may I take care of them?”

From there, she began rescuing children, providing:

  • ✓ Safe, loving shelter
  • ✓ Nutritious food and clothing
  • ✓ Quality education
  • ✓ Counseling and emotional healing
  • ✓ Spiritual guidance and family life

Our mission is to instill self-worth, identity, hope, and leadership skills — so these children become community changemakers, not repeaters of past cycles.

Growth, Partnership & Major Milestones

For years the work grew through faith and sacrifice. In 2024, God connected Esther with Mr. Erik Jager of the Nofam Foundation (Netherlands). After sharing her vision in Amsterdam, Erik visited Uganda.

Moved by what he saw — children learning in a simple party tent — he provided generous support. This enabled us to build proper classrooms, dormitories, and facilities. What was once makeshift became a true paradise for the children.

Community Embrace

The Serah Project serves rescued children and uplifts three surrounding communities. Local leaders — including a village chairman who donated thousands of free bricks — and volunteers have embraced the work, showing grassroots unity and support.

Esther’s testimony is one of sacrifice, unwavering faith, and the power of partnership. No child is defined by their parents’ mistakes — every life holds divine potential when met with prayer, love, and action.
